Police Fatally Shoot Armed Man at Private Property in Tingalpa, Brisbane

Police have shot and killed a man at a private home in Tingalpa, eastern Brisbane, after reports he was armed with a knife.

The incident occurred on Wednesday morning after emergency services received reports of a man behaving erratically at the property. Officers attended the address where they encountered the man, who was reportedly wielding a knife.

Police said the man did not comply with directions and advanced towards officers. A police officer then discharged their firearm, striking the man. He was treated at the scene by paramedics but died a short time later.

The shooting is the latest in a series of recent police use-of-force incidents in Queensland and New South Wales. Two other police shootings occurred in the past 48 hours — one in Newcastle where a man was shot in the shoulder during an arrest, and another in Sydney’s Potts Point where a man was shot dead.

Officers from the Queensland Police Service’s Ethical Standards Command and investigators from the State Crime Command’s Homicide Group have been notified and will conduct an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

The identity of the deceased man has not been released. Police have confirmed he was known to them and that no other members of the public were injured during the incident.

Police use of force under review

The incident comes amid heightened scrutiny of police shootings nationally. Queensland Police are expected to release body-worn camera and CCTV footage in coming days as part of the standard post-shooting investigation protocol.

Community support services have been made available for residents in the area and for the officers involved. Police said the officers involved have been stood down from operational duties pending the outcome of the investigation, which is standard procedure.

Local residents described the street as usually quiet. One neighbour, who did not wish to be named, said she heard shouting and a single gunshot shortly after 9am.

“It was over very quickly,” she said. “Police were everywhere within minutes.”

Authorities continue to emphasise that all police shootings are subject to independent review.
