Spotswood man charged after armed stand-off in Melbourne’s south-west

Firearms squad charges Spotswood man after suburban stand-off

A 44-year-old man has been charged after a major police operation in Spotswood, in Melbourne’s south-west, developed into a tense stand-off during a firearms and drug trafficking investigation.

Victoria Police said detectives from the Illicit Firearms Squad, supported by the Special Operations Group, attended an address on Hudsons Road about 8.50am on Friday to execute a warrant. Police allege the man was uncooperative and armed with a firearm, prompting officers to establish a security operation around the property while negotiators worked to bring the incident under control.

The situation ended about 90 minutes later, with the man arrested outside the property about 10.20am. Police later confirmed there was no ongoing risk to the community.

Charges include drug trafficking and firearm offences

The Spotswood man was charged with a series of serious offences following the operation. Police said the allegations include trafficking a commercial quantity of methylamphetamine, using a firearm in contravention of a firearms prohibition order, being a prohibited person using a firearm, discharging a firearm at premises, dealing with property suspected of being proceeds of crime, and several drug possession offences.

During a search of the property, investigators allegedly seized a firearm, mobile phones, laptops, watches, OC spray and drugs, including methylamphetamine and testosterone. A 36-year-old Spotswood woman was also interviewed by detectives and released pending further enquiries.

The charged man is expected to face Melbourne Magistrates’ Court, where police will outline the allegations as the matter begins its passage through the courts. The charges remain allegations at this stage and have not been tested in court.

Residents told to stay inside as police secured Hudsons Road

The police response caused disruption across part of Spotswood on Friday morning. Residents near Hudsons Road were urged to remain indoors while officers managed the incident, and police asked members of the public to avoid the area. The affected zone included streets near Hicks Street, Melbourne Road, Birmingham Street and The Avenue.

A section of Hudsons Road, including an area close to a primary school, was blocked while the operation unfolded. The road was later cleared after the arrest and the immediate police response ended.

Neighbours described an anxious wait as heavily armed officers surrounded the home. One witness told Nine News there appeared to be “a lot of negotiation going on” and said the incident had sent “shockwaves” through residents living nearby.

Investigation remains active

The operation forms part of a broader investigation into alleged firearm and drug trafficking activity. Police have not ruled out further enquiries, and investigators are expected to examine the items seized from the property as part of the ongoing case.

The incident is likely to renew local concern about illicit firearms and drug distribution in suburban communities, particularly where police allege weapons and commercial quantities of drugs are involved. Specialist police units are often deployed in such cases because of the risk posed to officers, residents and suspects when firearms are believed to be present.

For Spotswood residents, the most immediate concern was the sudden presence of armed police and the temporary lockdown-style warnings issued around the neighbourhood. Authorities have stressed that the danger has passed, while the court process will now determine the next stage of the case against the 44-year-old man.
