Police Treat Concord Bay Deaths as Murder-Suicide

Police are investigating the deaths of a man and his six-year-old daughter in Sydney’s inner west as a suspected murder-suicide, after both bodies were recovered from the Parramatta River at Concord on Saturday.

The case has shocked the local community and prompted a homicide squad investigation, with officers now preparing a report for the coroner. Police say the man, aged in his 40s, had hired a small boat and taken the child onto the water before the vessel was later found unattended in a bay near Bayview Park.

Emergency services were first called shortly before 11:45am after reports a man had been found dead in the river. Police later recovered the body of the child. Officers have said a separate call had also been made by a friend of the man, who raised concerns for both the child’s welfare and the man’s welfare.

Boat, Note and Life Jackets Examined

Investigators have focused on what was found on the hired boat after the recovery operation. Marine Area Commander Superintendent Joe McNulty told media that police located life jackets on board, including a small child-sized jacket, along with a suicide note and other evidence that contributed to the current investigative conclusion.

The operation involved water police, police divers, the marine area command and police aviation resources. CCTV from a nearby waterfront property has also assisted investigators as they try to piece together the sequence of events before the bodies were found.

Police have said domestic violence became a definite line of inquiry after the recovery of the bodies. The man was not known to police, according to investigators. The child’s mother is being supported by officers, and police have described the case as traumatic for the family, the community and emergency workers involved in the response.

Community Grieves After “Senseless” Tragedy

Burwood Police Area Command Superintendent Christine McDonald described the deaths as an absolute tragedy for the family and the broader community. Local residents also expressed distress over the incident, with one resident saying the death of such a young child had hurt everyone in the area.

The girl’s age and the circumstances of the recovery have made the case especially confronting. Police have urged the public to allow investigators to establish the facts through the formal process rather than speculate about what occurred.

The homicide squad’s involvement does not mean all answers are immediate. In cases where police suspect murder-suicide, investigators still need to reconstruct the timeline, review witness accounts, assess CCTV and forensic material, and provide evidence to the coroner. That process is intended to determine not only how the deaths occurred, but also what warning signs or circumstances may have preceded them.

Support Services Remain Central

The case has again drawn attention to family violence and mental health support services. Police and support organisations regularly stress that people facing immediate danger should call Triple Zero. Those affected by family or domestic violence can also contact 1800RESPECT on 1800 737 732, while Lifeline is available on 13 11 14 for crisis support.

Authorities have not released the names of the man or child. The investigation remains ongoing, and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
