**PERTH, WA – May 25, 2026** – A grim dawn broke over Perth this morning after a 22-year-old man was tragically killed in an alleged hit-and-run incident on the Mitchell Freeway. The fatal crash, which unfolded last night, has led to charges against the alleged driver and continues to snarl traffic for morning commuters.
Emergency services were called to the northbound lanes of the Mitchell Freeway, between Hepburn Avenue and Whitfords Avenue, around 7:20 PM on Sunday. Reports indicated a man had been struck by a vehicle. Paramedics arriving on scene found the 22-year-old with critical injuries. Despite their efforts, he succumbed to his wounds at the scene.
Police allege a 30-year-old man from Iluka was behind the wheel of the vehicle involved in the collision. It is further alleged that the driver left the scene of the accident. However, he later presented himself at Joondalup Police Station, where he was swiftly arrested and taken into custody.
The alleged driver has since been charged with serious offences, including failing to stop and render assistance after an incident occasioning death, and failing to report an incident occasioning death or grievous bodily harm to police. He has been refused bail and is slated to appear in Joondalup Magistrates Court today, Monday, May 25, 2026.
The aftermath of the tragedy continues to impact north Perth commuters, with the Mitchell Freeway remaining closed northbound between Hepburn Avenue and Whitfords Avenue. Main Roads has issued advisories urging drivers to seek alternative routes as heavy congestion persists in the area.
