Queensland Mother Charged with Murder After Four-Year-Old Found Dead
LOWOOD, QLD – A 31-year-old Queensland nurse, Jessie Renee Phillips, has been charged with murder following the discovery of her four-year-old daughter, Cleo Rose Catterall, unresponsive in their Lowood home late Monday night.
Emergency services were called to the McInnes Street property, approximately 60 kilometres west of Brisbane, just after 11 PM on Monday. Despite the immediate efforts of first responders, the young girl could not be revived.
Detective Inspector Michael Manago described the scene as “terribly confronting” for those involved. Police confirmed the girl’s mother, Phillips, was the only adult present in the house at the time of the incident.
While authorities have not disclosed the specific cause of death, detectives are actively investigating whether Cleo Catterall was drowned. A post-mortem examination is scheduled to provide further clarity on the circumstances surrounding her tragic passing.
Phillips appeared before the Ipswich Magistrates Court on Tuesday afternoon. She was remanded in custody and is expected to reappear on June 16. She did not enter a plea during her initial hearing.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the quiet rural community of Lowood. Neighbours expressed devastation, with one resident, Peter Atkinson, remarking, “It’s a bit shocking really, you wouldn’t expect it in Lowood… It’s still a child… all her life in front of her and she’s gone now, it’s just ridiculous.”
Police Minister Dan Purdie conveyed the profound sadness of the situation, stating, “It’s tragic for the family, it’s tragic for the community, it’s tragic for the frontline police and emergency services that went there.” Premier David Crisafulli also expressed his deep concern, calling for a “full and thorough investigation.”
The investigation is in its early stages, with a team of investigators conducting a comprehensive examination of all events leading up to the child’s death. Police have indicated they will also be exploring whether any other individuals are linked to the murder.
