Elderly NSW Couple Stabbed in Brutal Home Invasion, Intruder Shot by Victim

An elderly couple from Torrington in northern New South Wales are recovering after being viciously attacked during a home invasion early Thursday morning.

The Attack

Police say 75-year-old Keith Blessing and his 72-year-old wife Di were asleep at their isolated rural property when 34-year-old Joshua Dylan Trethewey allegedly broke into their home around 12:15am on June 4.

Trethewey forced entry into the couple’s Torrington residence, located about 65 kilometres south-west of Tenterfield. Once inside, he allegedly stabbed Mrs Blessing in the chest and slashed Mr Blessing across the abdomen with a knife.

Victim Fights Back

The 75-year-old homeowner managed to defend himself and his wife during the terrifying ordeal. Mr Blessing retrieved a firearm and shot the alleged intruder, wounding him.

Emergency services were called to the scene shortly after the attack. Both victims were transported to hospital with serious injuries. A hospital update later confirmed the couple were in a serious but stable condition.

Charges Laid

Trethewey, 34, was taken into custody after receiving treatment for his gunshot wound. He has been charged with two counts of wounding with intent to murder and is due to appear before a bail court.

Police say the attack was unprovoked and targeted a remote property with no prior connection between the alleged offender and the victims.

Ongoing Investigation

Detective Inspector Kingsley Chapman from the New England Police District is leading the investigation. Officers are working to determine Trethewey’s movements leading up to the attack and whether he had any prior knowledge of the property.

The Blessing family expressed relief that the couple survived the attack. No charges will be laid against the 75-year-old homeowner who acted in self-defence.

Authorities are urging rural residents to remain vigilant and review their home security measures following the incident.
