Australia is set to resume crucial funding to the United Nations agency operating in Gaza, following a one-month suspension as confirmed by Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong.

Minister for Foreign Affairs Penny Wong delivers her keynote speech during the ASEAN-Australia Special Summit on March 04, 2024 in Melbourne, Australia. Southeast Asian leaders are gathered for talks that run through March 6 on a wide range of topics, including clean energy cooperation and China’s aggressive stance in the South China Sea.

Australia is set to resume its $6 million funding to the United Nations’ vital aid agency in Gaza, following a one-month suspension. This decision comes amidst escalating concerns about the worsening humanitarian situation. Several countries, including Australia, halted their support to UNRWA last month due to revelations linking some staff to Hamas’ terrorist activities against Israel.

Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong announced on Friday that the Australian government is confident in UNRWA’s status as a non-terrorist organization. Additional safeguards will be implemented to ensure Australian taxpayer funding is adequately protected. Senator Wong emphasized the indispensable life-saving work carried out by UNRWA while acknowledging the seriousness of recent allegations. The decision reflects collaborative efforts to rebuild trust and ensure diligent use of Australian aid contributions.

Senator Wong further declared an extra $4 million allocation to UNICEF for the provision of immediate services, along with $2 million to a UN entity dedicated to enhancing humanitarian access in Gaza.

Additionally, Australia will endorse initiatives by Jordan and the UAE aimed at facilitating the distribution of essential humanitarian aid to Gaza’s civilians. Furthermore, Australia will supply 140 ADF aerial delivery parachutes for use in humanitarian relief operations.

Senator Wong urged Israel to cooperate with endeavors to increase the flow of food and aid into Gaza without delay.
